چکیده

Aims. We test whether the universal initial mass function (UIMF) or the integrated galaxial IMF (IGIMF) can be employed to explain the metallicity distribution (MD) of giants in the Galactic bulge. Methods. We make use of a single-zone chemical evolution model developed for the Milky Way bulge in the context of an inside-out model for the formation of the Galaxy. We checked whether it is possible to constrain the yields above 80M⊙ by forcing the UIMF and required that the resulting MD matches the observed ones. We also extended the analysis to the bulge of M31 to investigate a possible variation of the IMF among galactic bulges. Several parameters that have an impact on stellar evolution (star-formation efficiency, gas infall timescale) are varied. Results. We show that it is not possible to satisfactorily reproduce the observed metallicity distribution in the two galactic bulges unless assuming a flatter IMF (x ≤ 1.1) than the universal one. Conclusions. We conlude that it is necessary to assume a variation in the IMF among the various environments.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The Galaxy and its stellar halo: insights on their formation from a hybrid cosmological approach

We use a series of high-resolution simulations of a ‘Milky-Way’ halo coupled to semianalytic methods to study the formation of our own Galaxy and of its stellar halo. The physical properties of our model Milky Way, as well as the age and metallicity distribution of stars in the different components, are in relatively good agreement with observational measurements. Assuming that the stellar halo...

Evidence for a Non-Universal Stellar Initial Mass Function from the Integrated Properties of SDSS Galaxies

This paper revisits the classical Kennicutt method for inferring the stellar initial mass function (IMF) from the integrated light properties of galaxies. The large size, uniform high quality data set from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR4 is combined with more in depth modeling and quantitative statistical analysis to search for systematic IMF variations as a function of galaxy luminosity. Gala...

Statistical Confirmation of a Stellar Upper Mass Limit

We derive the expectation value for the maximum stellar mass (mmax) in an ensemble of N stars, as a function of the IMF upper-mass cutoff (mup) and N . We statistically demonstrate that the upper IMF of the local massive star census observed thus far in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds clearly exhibits a universal upper mass cutoff around 120− 200 M⊙ for a Salpeter IMF, although the result i...
